Did you know a group of flamingos is called a flamboyance? And they certainly are, with their brilliant plumage and hooked black-tipped beaks, they are instantly recognizable.
Flamingos get their distinctive color from brine shrimp and algae which make up the majority of their diet. They are filter feeders and place their heads upside-down in water to separate mud and silt from the food they eat with their specially adapted bills.
Interestingly, flamingo’s knees are located close to their bodies and hidden by their feathers, making what are essentially their heels appear to be bending backwards and giving these fascinating birds their characteristic stance.
