StarsNStripes
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress unanimously passed a resolution that would unite the thirteen colonies under one standard:
“Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
Stars were added as new states joined the union. The flag as we know it today, with 50 stars, was designed in 1960 by Ohio high school student Robert Heft, for a history project after the addition of Alaska and Hawaii. Selected by President Eisenhower out of over 1500 entries, it remains America’s official flag to this day.
